HauptbeschreibungLocal control is the basic requirement for any successful cancer therapy. Next to surgery radiation therapy is the most promising option to achieve this goal. A relatively new treatment modality in this field is IntraOperative RadioTherapy (IORT), which is increasingly used for patients with early breast cancer. This intensive radiation treatment allows direct radiation to the tumor while sparing normal surrounding tissue. This handbook includes the basics of the IORT principles, a detailed description of techniques for IORT and a review of ongoing trials showing the benefits of this method.
