Drawing on more than ten years of archival and editorial research on Wittgenstein's unpublished papers, Alois Pichler provides the first account of the crucial shift that took place when Wittgenstein began his Philosophical Investigations in late Autumn 1936 in Skjolden, Norway. The emergence of the distinctive philosophical character of the Philosophical Investigations is traced to Wittgenstein's decision to adopt a new way of writing. He gave up the project of writing a traditional philosophical treatise in a single authoritative and authorial voice in favour of writing a polyphonic work with many voices. This change of style is intimately connected with fundamental changes in Wittgenstein's philosophical methods. Previous interpreters have overestimated the continuities between the Philosophical Investigations and Wittgenstein's writing during the first half of the 1930s; this philosophically and philologically informed analysis of key texts clarifies the true nature of Wittgenstein's revolutionary achievement in the Philosophical Investigations.
