Car navigation systems are modern tools for wayfinding and are nowadays an integral part of the mobile society. However, current navigation solutions are still very inflexible to handle, because they consistently deliver the same type of support in all environments and situations, regardless of the circumstances and the individual needs of the driver. An intelligent navigation support should be… able to adapt to the respective situational context and the individual preferences of the driver and unobtrusively present only those information that are actually required for a particular route.
In this work it was investigated, how the quality of route guidance systems can be improved by driver- and situation-related adaptation. While recent approaches only focus on a specific problem area, the solution presented here is based on a systematization of the influence factors for the individual information and support need of the driver. Furthermore, for the adaptation of the navigations support an approach has been developed, that takes into account the content and level of detail of driving instructions as well as their situation-related presentation.
Based on an elaborate examination of the characteristics of driving situations within the driver vehicle environment system (DVE), the need to adjust the support for the driver is derived. The results of empirical studies on the impact of various driving situation characteristics on the support need of the driver are used to develop a concept for generating flexible route descriptions and a rule based adaptation of the in-car navigation support. Additionally, approaches for its technical implementation are presented, which are prototypically realized. The work closes presenting the results of a multistage evaluation.
