The DFG-funded research project, directed by G. Freund for more than 20 years, closes a yawning gap in Asian Quarternary and Palaeolithic research. At the same time it gives proof of how intense fieldwork can turn a blank spot in the field of stone age cultures into repeatedly and partially densely frequented territory. Far over 100 sites in previously selected regions (based on geological and… palaeontological survey), mainly in the Himalayan foothills of western Nepal, can presently only give a hint at the importance Nepal, sited right at the brim of the „Movius line“, will gain for the understanding of the development of Asian cultures, from early Acheulian up to the late upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic. Main emphasis and base intention of this publication is a diligent presentation and analysis of the lithic material and its chronostratigraphic location; over and above that, its special signifi cance lies in that the author describes the context with neighbouring Asian countries from Korea and China over Vietnam to Indonesia and especially India, based on personal studies, making it an essential source for stone age research in southern, eastern and south-eastern Asia.
