We camouflaged our project in a corn field in the direction of the barrage.
In the middle of the field under two-meter-high maize plants everyone got a cigar.
Lighting the cigar with the match and getting a full load of smoke was a disappointment.

We stopped pulling the lungs with it. But puffed until only a stump remained.
Certainly the… filter cigarettes taste better, we thought.
So we bought a pack of HB cigarettes.
We divided this pack among ourselves and started smoking. The enjoyment wasn't that satisfying either, but we didn't want to take cigarettes home with us. So we put three cigarettes in our mouths at the same time to put an end to the hustle and bustle.
With 10 mopeds we drove towards Behringersmühle in Franconian Switzerland. Günther Müller always wanted to experience the risk. He passed every tractor without paying attention to the oncoming traffic. He lay down on his machine and accelerated. Again and again he looked around to see if someone was following him.
It bordered on a miracle that he was still alive today.
Siegbert Reinwand drove just as daringly.
He always had the problem of running out of fuel in his Zündapp.
Up to the last drop of gasoline, Siegbert always gave full throttle. When his engine popped and stalled, he turned his moped over so that some more fuel could flow into his carburetor.
I often lent him some of my gas. We loosened the fuel hose and put a liter or two in his tank. At the next gas station it happened that he didn't have enough money to fill up with him. We pooled some change and paid his gas bill. Siegbert grew up as a single child with his mother with his uncle Adelbert in Augsfeld. He was a loving slob who you got your last shirt from if he could help. In 2013 he took his own life.
Günther was our scaredy when driving a moped. He always drove right at the back.
