Working with Lev was a real pleasure, a pleasure unfortunately cut short by his illness and early death. He was a dear friend, with whom I spent numerous days, and of course nights arguing about various historical or linguistic facts, and I still deeply miss him and the intellectual partnership we developed over the years.
We started our cooperation when the Rroma Foundation was founded… by Cristina Kruck in 1992, a very long while back, and the work we did together was very much influenced by the foundation. Main driver of this influence was the actual diversity of the foundation board members. We had, of course, Dragan Jevremovič, Kalderaš from Serbia, our president and the best paramičia teller I have heard in my lifetime, besides being a wonderful and insightful person; we had Stahiro Stankiewicz, Polsko Rom from eastern Poland, born in Majdanek, from a family of travelling Roma, journalist and activist, with a wonderful Polsko Romanes when he is not doing a baro melanž [a big mix – from Stahiro himself]; we had Rahim Burhan, Arlii from Macedonia, founder of the Pralipe theatre in Germany, whose work continues to be on top of the scales for theatre; we had Gusztav Varga, often known as Kokalo, Čurar from Hungary, whose work, besides creating the first internationally recognised Roma music group from Hungary-Kalyi Jag-, also had a school for Roma in Hungary; we had Mozes Heinschink, linguist, recorder of Roma tales (to be admired in the Wiener Phonogram Archiv) and married to a Sepetčides originally from Greece; and we had numerous other people, such as Patricia Klecanda, who worked with us from the most varied backgrounds. The key point is that the core of the foundation mixed Balkan, Vlax, and Nordic influences. We were only de-facto missing some representation of the Carpathian group.
We were working with Roma from all over Europe, and the foundation itself was mixed in terms of regions and groups. This taught us all a lot—and really a lot. Key point was that the commonalities of the various Roma from all regions and groups by far overwhelmed the perceived differences between the groups. The second, probably less popular, was that Vlax Roma are the actual exception among Roma: their language being furthest away from the roots of Romanes and from all other dialects [...] Dieses Produkt haben wir gerade leider nicht auf Lager.
