Foreword For Guo Shuang, woodcuts are a part of her life as well as a part of her aspirations. Guo Shuang Woodcuts records the bits and pieces of her life, and it is also a review of her past experiences. The woodcuts, black or white, match Guo's straightforward character. Guo carves wood, and her carving knives also shape her personality. Guo has a stronger thirst for knowledge than other of her peers. Moreover, she is always curious about everything like a child. She carves her life day after day as diligently as a farmer. Guo’s works “Going to the Fair ”and “The Wedding ”created during her undergraduate period. are derived from the life experience of her original family. So her works are filled with nostalgia for the hometown. These woodcut works often use large-scale picture layout. Even though the knife technique is rigid, when they are connected, they generate warmth.The award of the work is not only a reward for Guo's hard work, but also a tribute to her teachers who instructed her. The 16 woodcut works “The Grass ”reated during the postgraduate period are illustrations for Kang Bai's love poem collection. These pictures fit in the gap between poems, just as grass grows in the field, exuding wafts of fragrance. “The Puppet Series“ is also a work during this period. It is a work for a group of special patients suffering from serious illness. This series of works is composed of many small woodcuts, which shows not only the author’s humanistic care, but also her attention moves from the grand narrative to the individual. Guo's living environment changed, and her attention also changed . Once I tried to speculate about her work from the perspective of the creator. Her works created during undergraduate are from image to image, that is, a large number of photos and sketches accumulated and recombined into a grand picture, The characters which are arranged autonomously and imagined reasonably,are reproduced from her past experience.
