Beschreibung
The development of technologies onboard ships and later in history onboard aircrafts has had always a high impact on the development of technology in general in the history of technology. Important milestones in the history of energy conversion technology had been the steam engine having strong maritime roots as well and later the gas turbine having its technological breakthrough as an aircraft… engine. These developments had been driven by the need of a better use of energy. Today we are faced with new challenges in technology as well and again aircraft and maritime technology may become a technology driver. The development of the fuel cell is going to change the actual energy conversion technology towards higher efficiency. The architecture of transportation technologies is going to change the actual mechanical systems to more or all-electric systems. Mechatronic systems can be expected leading to clear changes in the supply industry. The increasing energy demand of an increasing population and the necessity to reduce emissions generates the demand on new supply sources and strategies. Hydrogen is one option ideal for fuel cells but not a generic energy source. There are interesting projects on the way to face all of these challenges. These concerning fuel cells and these concerning hydrogen are main elements of the international research, environmental and energy policy and potential key elements of future mechatronic system architectures for transportation.
