The Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor are occupied by a number of geotectonic provinces associated with the interaction between several plates and microplates [PINAR et al., 1977; DEWEY et al., 1979; JACKSON et al., 1984]: Continent-continent collision zones (Bitlis-Zagros, Caucasus), extensional provinces (West Turkey, North Aegean), prominent transform fault systems (North, SE, NE Anatolian, Dead Sea Fault) and different phases of subduction (Hellenic Arc, Cyprus Arc, Black Sea, Makran subduction). It is generally accepted that the evolution of the Anatolian assemblage of geological units is closely related to the closure of the Tethyan Sea (SENGÖR and YILMAZ, 1981). Turkey consists of a number of units corresponding to former plate tectonic environments such as island arcs, submarine continental platforms with Atlantic-type and Pacific-type margins. They were accreted to Eurasia since the late Paleozoic resulting in the development of the Anatolian orogeny. In a recent paper YILMAZ [1990] reviewed the Mesozoic-Cenozoic evolution of the Anatolian orogenic belt in the light of plate tectonics by emphasizing the geological history of three regions: The Sakarya continent, The Central Pontides and SE Anatolia. Recent crustal movements and deformations are controlled by the northerly movement of the Arabian plate against Eurasia. The bulk of the deformation in Asia Minor is caused by the Caucasus convergent zone and crustal escape along strike-slip faults. Contemporaneously the opening of the Gulf of Aden, of the Red Sea and the activation of the Dead Sea Fault takes place. The ongoing convergence caused extrusion of continental wedges along transform faults [McKENZIE, 1972, 1978] and the initiation of the North, NE and SE Anatolian Transform Faults (NAF, NEAF, SEAF) [BARKA and HANCOCK, 1984]. Paleomagnetic data provide evidence for substantial rotation of crustal blocks in the vicinity of the NAF (see e.g. the Almacik Flake [SARIBUDAK et al., 1990]. Other block rotations in W. Turkey have been reported by WESTAWAY [1990 a,b]. It is assumed that the convergence of the Arabian plate created the NE Anatolian block - bounded by the Caucasus, the Bitlis-Zagros suture zones, the NAF and NEAF - and the Anatolian plate - bounded by the NAF, the SEAF and the Cyprus Arc.
