Aux environs de l’an 800 après J.C., le chrétien Boktišo?, médecin en chef de la cour du calife abbasside ?arun ar-Rashid à Bagdad, adresse à son patriarche des questions à propos de la condition de l’âme après la mort. Les réponses de Timothée Ier, Catholicos de l’Église de l’Est, se trouvent dans la lettre 2 de son œuvre épistolaire. Il y expose une synthèse originale de la pensée psychologique développée par des chrétiens de langue syriaque entre les IVe et VIIIe siècles de notre ère. La vision de l’homme qui émerge de sa description de la vie de l’âme mêle, d’un côté, philosophie grecque et anthropologie antiochienne et sécularise, de l’autre, le corps mort en légitimant d’un point de vue religieux l’étude de l’anatomie. C’est aussi pour Timothée l’occasion de défendre l’idée d’une interaction entre le libre arbitre et la providence divine au moment de l’entrée et la sortie de l’âme du corps, témoignant de l’imprégnation du débat musulman relatif aux notions de liberté et déterminisme dans les milieux de médecins chrétiens. Ce livre inscrit la lettre de Timothée à Rabban Boktišo? dans l’histoire tardo-antique et médiévale de la réflexion anthropologique syriaque. Le traité, dont la première traduction française figure dans ce volume, apparaît comme le point culminant de cette réflexion. In the Abbasid Baghdad, around the year 800 AD, the Christian chief physician of the Caliph Harun ar-Rashid, Boktišo?, asks his patriarch Timothy I, Catholicos of the Church of the East about the condition of the soul after the death. His answers constitute the second of his letters. It is an original synthesis of the most relevant statements of the Syriac Christians psychological thought between 4th and 8th Century. Timothy describes the human soul life mixing Greek Philosophy and Antiochean Anthropology and at the same time he secularizes the dead body, legitimating the study of the anatomy from a religious point of view. Timothy also defends the interaction between free will and divine providence in the entrance and the exit of the soul from the body. This defense reflects the relevance that the Muslim debate on freedom and determinism had inside the Christian circles of Medicine. The book inscribes Timothy’s letter to Rabban Boktišo? in the history of the Syriac anthropological reflection during Late Antiquity. Vittorio Berti (1975) est Docteur de Recherche en Histoire du Christianisme et des Églises (2006). Il a conduit ses activités de recherche aux universités de Padoue, Zurich et Roma Tre. Il a publié plusieurs travaux sur les églises syriaques entre IVe et IXe siècle, qui s’intéressent en particuliers à la culture scolastique, à la politique religieuse, aux missions, à la théologie mystique et au monachisme. Sa première monographie (Vita e studi di Timoteo I, patriarca cristiano di Baghdad. Studi sull’epistolario e sulle fonti contigue, Paris, Peeters 2009) a été publiée dans la collection ' Studia Iranica. Cahiers '. Il est secrétaire de Syriaca: studi siriaci in Italia et, en France, membre de la Société d’études syriaques.
