The new »Paul« is the only single-volume of German on historical principles in which the citation of sources from post-1945 literature figures as prominently as material from earlier periods. It thus contrives both to enhance our understanding of earlier literature (notably Classical and Romantic) and to prompt more searching reflection on the structures and tendencies of modern German by placing…  them in a historical perspective. As such it is addressed very pointedly to teachers of German.
