Christophe Nihan investigates the composition history of Leviticus by combining redaction criticism with comparative observations, cross-cultural studies in rituals, and inner-biblical exegesis. His analysis focuses on the sources used by the authors of Leviticus and the way in which they are re-interpreted; on the book's relationship to P; and, finally, on the place of Leviticus in the… composition of the Torah. It is argued that Lev 1-16 was initially composed as the conclusion to the P account in Gen-Ex. This composition reinterprets earlier ritual texts serving as check-lists for priests, transforming them into a revelation made to Moses at Mt Sinai for all the community and thereby achieving P's redefinition of Israel as the "priestly nation" of the world. The introduction of Lev 17-26 (27), in turn, reinterprets the priestly document and closes the revelation at Mt Sinai by bridging the gap between Lev 1-16 and other biblical “codes” such as Deut 12-26 and Ex 21-23 at the time of the Torah's composition.
