The International Network of Institutions for advanced education, training and R&D in Computer Graphics technology, systems and applications (INI-GraphicsNet) is the largest research network worldwide entirely dedicated to the field of Computer Graphics. The institutions in the network are located in Darmstadt (Germany), Rostock (Germany), Guimarães (Portugal), San Sebastian (Spain), Trento… (Italy), Providence (U.S.A.), Omaha (U.S.A.), Seoul (South Korea) and Singapore. It employs more than 350 full-time engineers and scientists and more than 600 part-time researchers. The approximate yearly turnover is more than 40 Million EUR. The INI-GraphicsNet is directed by Professor José Luis Encarnação. The "Selected Readings 2003" consist of 36 articles selected from a total of 201 scientific publications contributed by all institutions of the INI-GraphicsNet. All articles previously appeared in various scientific books, journals, conferences and workshops, and are reprinted with permission of the respective copyright holders. The publications had to undergo a thorough review process by internationally leading experts and established technical societies. Therefore, the Selected Readings should give a fairly good and detailed overview of the scientific developments in the INI-GraphicsNet in the year 2003. The Selected Readings 2003 touches aspects and trends in Computer Graphics research and development in the areas of - Reconstruction and Modeling- User Interaction- Digital Storytelling- Ambient Intelligence- Visualization, Simulation, Animation- Virtual Reality - Augmented Reality- Security Technology- Geographical Information Systems- Knowledge Management and Data Mining Prof. Encarnação as the director of the Fraunhofer IGD has established a "Best Paper Award" which is awarded each year to three authors of INI-GraphicsNet publications for their outstanding scientific contribution to the Computer Graphics community. An independent committee of international experts in Computer Graphics selects the award winners among all publications included in the Selected Readings of the respective year.
