Review by Pastor Guy Shaw Umhlanga Baptist Church, South Africa If you have ever met Stan Malina in person you will see his wonderful and likeable personality emerging throughout this book. His natural and somewhat dry humour, his ability to describe circumstances so that you feel that you were present, and his faith and his love for Jesus Christ abound in every page. The opening scene immediately captivates your mind as you begin to get a sense of what it must have been like for Stan to embark on his Project Paul and cycle the beautiful and yet challenging routes taken by the ‘greatest’ apostle there has ever been with the exception of Jesus Christ. Stan’s journey covered the areas travelled by the Apostle Paul in his second and third apostolic journeys as found in the scriptures. These journeys took place nearly 2000 years apart and were different in many ways and yet in some ways very similar. Stan got to ride his bicycle on far better roads whereas Paul would have walked dusty paths and rustic rudimentary roads. Stan had the benefit of laptop, mobile phone, camera and GPS to help guide him and document his trip whereas Paul would have used his own handwriting to keep a record and looked to ancient maps or the stars to plot his journey. Of course, as believers in the Lord Jesus, both Stan and Paul relied most on the greatest Guide there will ever be, the Holy Spirit to lead them in His paths to ministry and spiritual growth! In AD 50 Paul was taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to these towns for the first time whereas Stan’s heart was moved in AD 2010 that so many were steeped in the Islamic religion of modern day Turkey. In planning this Project Paul, Stan says, The most important aspect was the spiritual-theological preparation, which I described as spiritual archaeology’. I began to study the apostle Paul from different perspectives: chronological, authorship, co-workers, and so on. I spent long hours passionately studying the Bible, especially the passages, which related to my program. Once again, I found that reading and meditating on this holy book is not only an extraordinary spiritual enrichment, but also an intellectual feast. Referring to ‘spiritual archaeology’, I became convinced that my Project Paul was not just cycling on his footsteps, writing books, composing music, which relates to these messages, or even studying this subject. But above all, it was about having deeper spiritual experiences! I believe that God desires us to be such ‘spiritual archaeologists’, namely, that we would experience Him more and more intensely. That for me is the core of Stan’s book. On a practical level Stan encountered some gracious and kind people on his trip, people who gladly offered refreshing drinks and food. But he also encountered people who were quick to take advantage of him and charge him extra for food. At other times when his strength was waning due to long hours on the bicycle, the Lord miraculously provided for him. Here is one such encounter: …my lack of physical strength was now even more enhanced by my lack of ‘fuel’. I could do nothing, because there wasn’t any possibility, not a shop on the way, to buy something to eat. So, I turned to God, in simple prayer: ‘Lord, you said we should ask you for daily bread. Then give me bread, please!’ At that precise moment, in a deserted place, a little pickup truck filled with many blue containers, was passing by; and the containers were full of ekmeks, white Turkish loaves of bread. When the truck was about ten meters ahead of me, suddenly from the middle container a loaf of bread … ‘jumped’ out! It just ‘jumped’ out, as if it had legs, flew in my direction and landed in front of my bicycle!’ At another time when he was physically very weak he prayed and the Lord incredibly refreshed his body and restored his energy. On many days Stan would cycle well over 100kms! During his time on the road Stan learned the power of being content and that God will meet all of our needs not our greed’s. The Apostle Paul himself said in Philippians 4:12 “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” I heartily recommend this easy reading book to you. Through it you will not only get a glimpse into the life and journey of the Apostle Paul and be richly filled with the scriptures but you will also get a wonderful glimpse into the life and journey of Stan Malina who seeks to love the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart, soul, mind and strength.
