With more than 50 contributions by internationally renowned researchers, this richly illustrated 860-page work is an indispensable milestone in palaeolithic research in eastern France and the central expression of these many years of study. Contributions of significant results from neighbouring regions, such as the Jura, the Haute-Saône or the Beaujolais complete the spectrum. In chronological terms, the phase of transition from the last Neanderthals to the first Homo sapiens to come to Europe is the focus of interest. Situated on the central axis of the Rhine, Saône and Rhône rivers spanning Europe, the study area lies at the hinge between Central, Southern and Western Europe. The area is characterised by an unusual density of Neanderthal remains, which are studied in this publication in just as much detail as the question of the immediate transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic with the study of the MtA, the Châtelperronian and the Aurignacian. In addition to contributions on geology, geomorphology, palaeoenvironment and the relevance of site mapping, one focus of the book is devoted to lithic studies, with raw material analyses linking the region into a larger network. A particularly dense cluster of sites is present in the Gravettian, where we can discern a systematic pattern of space use. Finally, symbolic expressions with personal ornaments and art form a special focus. Of supra-regional importance, for example, are the discoveries of Palaeolithic cave art in Rully and the unique specimen of a decorated ivory spoon from Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu in the technological tradition of the famous ivory figures of the Swabian jura.
