Green and digital transformation as well as the adjustment of global supply chains as a result of geopolitical risks have led to a renaissance of industrial and location policies. In this context, subsidies take centre stage as a key instrument of government control. The new global subsidy race is emphasising national and international subsidy regulations. National legal frameworks, including foreign trade law, as well as bilateral and multilateral agreements, which increasingly include specific provisions on subsidies or state aid, characterise legal practice. Moreover, despite the need for reform, WTO subsidy law remains an authoritative multilateral regulatory framework. However, as further development of WTO law continues to stagnate, other instruments have recently become more important. The new Handbook on "International Subsidies" addresses the enormous practical importance of the topic. It explains the core provisions of the various regulations, systematises the findings for practical interpretation and thus makes the heterogeneous legal framework in the field of international state aid, subsidy and foreign trade law comprehensible and manageable.
