Rabbi Isaak Emil Lichtigfeld and the synagogue in Michelstadt
Lichtigfeld was born in 1894 in Burschtyn, a small town in what was then Austrian Eastern Galicia.
His parents left Galicia when Isaak was about 4 years old. He grew up with his family (parents and 5 siblings) in Düsseldorf.
Even as a teenager, he lived consciously and reflectively with the Orthodox Jewish religion. Hence his early… desire to become a rabbi, which he only realized much later.
Like so many of his peers at the time, he was enthusiastically involved in the First World War. He was wounded; but he survived - and matured afterwards.
He decided to study law, which he completed with a doctorate.
Then he married the Romanian Ruth Rosinbaum. They had four children, with whom they first lived in Düsseldorf and then in Cologne.
In 1933, the family fled to London. Lichtigfeld trained as a rabbi there - and then also worked as a rabbi.
They experienced the devastating bombings by the Nazi-Airforce in the early 1940s.
After the war, Lichtigfeld supported Jews in Germany and Cyprus who wanted to emigrate to Palestine.
Lichtigfeld followed and supported the founding of the state of Israel with great commitment.
In 1954, Lichtigfeld returned to Germany (with his wife): he worked as a rabbi in Frankfurt and
as a rabbi of the Jewish communities in Hessen.
His work was characterized by three main goals:
1. consolidation of the Jewish faith after the Nazi terror;
2. refounding the Jewish school in Frankfurt;
3. rededication of the Michelstadt synagogue as a museum.
The latter point is also the focus of this play! In this context, his life is re-enacted based on historical facts.
In this context, there is also a historical and political examination of the following issues:
- The origins and practice of Nazi terror?
- Nazi ideology and anti-Semitism?
- Judaism - religion and Zionism?
- Individual guilt and conformism?
- The synagogue in Michelstadt and the Jewish community?
