Jens-Uwe Heuer-James was born in 1967. He studied law in Hannover and, since 1996, has been a licensed attorney (with an OLG license since 2001). Since then, he has been employed in a leading law office in Hannover. In addition to his activities as an attorney, he has published a number of books, such as “Product Liability and Product Safety” and “The New Product Safety Law.” Heuer-James has been a partner in the “Commercial” field at Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft since December 2011. Since 1998, Heuer-James has advised the Gesellschaft für Technische Kommunikation (Association for Technical Communication) – tekom Deutschland e.V. and is responsible for the tekom Legal Service. He has been a member of the tekom Advisory Committee for Standards and Guidelines since its founding, and publishes regularly in the field of technical communication.
Heuer-James advises on all legal questions in the “Commercial” field. One particular focus of his work is the drafting and negotiation of complex contracts as well as claim management; another is advising on product liability and product safety, with special topics such as CE conformity assessment or technical documentation. His clients include end manufacturers and suppliers in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and the consumer goods sector.
Roland Schmeling, Dipl.-Phys., is the CEO of SCHMELING+CONSULTANTS in Heidelberg. The consulting business specializes in information quality management, from planning instructions in accordance with the law to optimized and measurable processes to the selection and introduction of suitable systems in technical communication.
Schmeling studied physics and analytical philosophy with a focus on language and perception. Since 1999, he has advised businesses on technical communication using analyses, concepts, workshops and training sessions in various sectors, inter alia mechanical and systems engineering, medical devices, the automotive industry, energy technology, electrical appliances and industrial components. He volunteers at tekom, contributing his efforts to various working groups, events, and publications. As a member of tekom Advisory Committee for Standards and Guidelines, he collaborated on IEC 82079-1 at the national and international levels.
Schmeling has taught quality assurance since 2004 at Furtwangen University. He proofreads documentation for TÜV SÜD and audits editing processes in accordance with DocCert. His work focuses on information concepts and standardization, quality assurance, legal conformity and CE, liability risk reduction, training sessions and the strategic growth of information development in businesses. Currently, new media and information reduction are in the foreground.
Matthias Schulz, born in 1962, is a Certified Translator for Engineering in the English language. From 1985 to 1990, he was active in establishing and leading the department of technical documentation and language services at Arburg Maschinenfabrik Hehl & Söhne in Loßburg. Since 1990, he has been an independent technical author and
translator. Since 1992, Schulz has been deeply involved with the EC Machinery Directive and all areas of CE marking. He has published various guides and specialist publications since 1991 on formulating and designing safety notes and warning messages, operating instructions, performance of risk assessments, text comprehensibility and terminology management. Schulz is known well among technical communicators and engineers from seminar events in the VDI-Haus in Stuttgart and in-house seminars. From 1999 to 2008, he taught Technical Law at the University of Applied Sciences Aalen, and from 2006 to 2013 he was a member of the tekom Advisory Committee for Standards and Guidelines. Schulz is currently active as an advisor for safety engineering in mechanical and systems engineering, as well as for the preparation and optimization of safety-related information in instruction manuals.
