Twentieth-century tremors shook it all loose—from welfare state experiments to the '81 Springbok tour riots that bloodied the streets for apartheid's end, capping with Lange's nuclear-free gut-punch that flipped off superpowers. Rebuilt from 'quake rubble and Treaty settlements, New Zealand stands as a bicultural brew: hobbit holes hiding old wounds, pavlova fights over origins, and a quiet roar saying small places can roar loud.
