Beschreibung
Seckel was a rabbi, Kabbalist, teacher, healer, helper, and advisor. He was also a thinker influenced by Enlightenment philosophy. Here are a few quotes: “Know this: one must not set limits on the sciences—which ones we may study and which are necessary or unnecessary” (Curriculum Booklet, p. 6: Source: Karl Erich Grözinger, op. cit., 176 ff) “It is permissible to ask how one can attain the truth. Answer: The Lord God, blessed be He, has instilled reason and insight in human beings…” (Booklet of Teaching Materials, p. 2) (Note: there are two additional booklets by him: The Booklet of Knowledge and The Booklet of Introductions; written between 1826 and 1835). Seckel managed this balancing act of simultaneously engaging in Enlightenment philosophy and Kabbalistic mysticism! Jewish tradition and innovation can thus be attributed to him; in this respect, he was also close to Moses Mendelssohn (1729–1782), a Jewish Enlightenment thinker. During the liberal era in Western Europe, Mendelssohn was held up as a model by both Reform Judaism and Orthodox Judaism. Seckel’s magnificent and extensive library naturally also included books by Kant and Mendelssohn! Seckel lived in Michelstadt from 1771 until his death in 1847. He was known far beyond Michelstadt and Germany! As a history teacher, playwright, and city guide, I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write a biography—and a play—about Seckel. A other occasion for this book/play was the planned commemorative year 2021, in which there is evidence that jews have lived for over 1700 YEARS IN THE TERRITORY OF TODAY'S GERMANY. The anniversary year is based on the year 321, in which the first Jewish community on German soil was certified. It was in Cologne where the association "321–2021: 1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany e.V." sits and has proclaimed the celebrations for the year 2021. The main concern of this festival year is to celebrate a lively, diverse Jewish life in Germany, to portray the long and eventful history of Jews in Germany and to present their enormous contribution to culture. "In this way, the association (see above) would like to make a public contribution to initiating cultural, political and interreligious debates within the society and setting clear signals against growing anti-Semitism." On this important occasion, public figures and important institutions have come together to celebrate this event nationwide. "In addition to a central ceremony, a variety of events are organized in cities and municipalities." The city of Michelstadt and its cultural office see their duty and have also planned the performance of my play "Seckel-Löb-Wormser: 1771 - 1847", among other things . The play was performed in Michelstadt in 2021—and the book was published at the same time.
