The book examines three interconnected themes: (1) the unexplored historical dynamics and recent developments surrounding the Jewish community in Indonesia before, during, and after colonial times; (2) the construction, reconstruction, perception, and representation of Jews (and to some extent, Israel and Zionists) in the classical and contemporary literature and the media, as well as in the… discourses, narratives, and practices of state actors from the Dutch colonial rulers to post-colonial governments and non-state agencies, especially Muslim and Christian religious scholars and leaders; and (3) the ambiguous encounter between Indonesia’s state/non-state actors and Israel (and Jews). The book aims, among others, to explore the complex interplay of negative and positive attitudes toward Jews (and Israel, especially after the founding of this state in 1948) as well as to examine antisemitism and philosemitism in Indonesia according to and as experienced by the country’s multiple agencies: state actors, media, writers, as well as Muslim and Christian religious scholars and leaders. This study reveals that antisemitism and philosemitism are not fixed, unchanging phenomena, but fluid and shifting from time to time and from one actor to another. This study divulges how the rise of antisemitic discourses, practices, campaigns, and propaganda, particularly since the advent of the Gestapo (Nazi Germany’s secret police force) and the Japanese occupation in the early 1940s, intersects with the country’s changing socio-religious contexts and political dynamics. Moreover, the study also unveils how some Indonesian Muslim religious and political actors and organizations attain political success, keep political power, maintain religious and political influence, and achieve economic/financial benefits through investing and capitalizing on the Palestinian cause while simultaneously demonizing Jews, Israel, and Zionists. This research found that antisemitic attitudes among some segments of Indonesian Muslims, spurred by the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, are also deeply rooted in anti-Jewish texts, teachings, narratives, and discourses in primary Islamic sources such as the Qur’an and Hadith, as well as classical and contemporary religious texts by noted Islamic scholars, activists, and ideologues. Moreover, anti-antisemitic practices among some Muslim scholars, leaders, and activists are also driven by their polemics, disagreements, and opposition to the country’s Islamists and conservative Muslim groups. Equally, philosemitic narratives, discourses, and practices among Indonesian Christians are profoundly shaped, reshaped, and influenced by a mixture of various factors, including Biblical texts, Christian teachings and doctrines, and their unpleasant domestic religious and sociopolitical events, such as Christian-Muslim violence, tension, and intolerance. The research also found that even though relationships between Indonesian Muslims and Israel or Jews are generally tense, efforts to build productive relations exist between the Indonesian and Israeli government officials, as well as among social and religious actors in both countries.
