A museum? We tend to imagine it as a quiet, timeless place, with walls lined with motionless paintings and display cases filled with carefully lit objects. It is this reassuring and familiar image that dominates official definitions: since 1951, ICOM has described a museum as a permanent institution dedicated to conservation, research and transmission. However, this vision is incomplete. It leaves… the other side of the picture in the shadows: the restoration workshops, the storage rooms, the transport crates, the experts who are often invisible, who move, repair, document and negotiate. This book takes this discrepancy between the permanence that is displayed and the impermanence that is experienced as its starting point, and uses it as the thread running through a long history, from the 18th century to the present day. It focuses on three main contexts – Paris (France), Vienna (Austria) and Ndar (Senegal) – to remind us that museums are not uniform entities. This book invites us to write a different history of museums, one based on their impermanence and fragility, in a context marked by ethical and ecological discussions. It is intended, in particular, for students, who will read a different history of museums. It can be used as a textbook for studying collections, but also places and practices.
