Ian Watson was born in the port and shipbuilding city of Belfast and left for Germany to seek fame and fortune – the quest continues. He now lives in the port and shipbuilding city of Bremen, where he worked as a university lecturer in British and Irish Literature and Creative Writing. He has been writing and publishing poems, articles and literary translations in both English and German for over thirty years. He wrote Song and Democratic Culture in Britain (London/New York 1993) and the school text-book War and Peace: Voices from the Battlefield (Stuttgart 1995) and – with Diethelm Knauf and Jürgen Dragowski – also co-edited the bi-lingual Alive and Kicking: Fußball zwischen England und Deutschland (Berlin 1994). Kurzpass-Spiel, a German-language book of short texts on football, was published in 2012. His poetry collection Granny’s Interpreter is forthcoming with Salmon Poetry in Ireland. He has worked for radio and television and in 1994 he founded and still co-edits newleaf magazine with Simon Makhali and Julia Boll. He is vice-chairman of the Virtual Literature House in Bremen.
