… Milan Hlavačka studied German and history at Charles University in Prague, receiving his doctorate from the Faculty of Philosophy in 1979. Since 1980, he has been a research associate at the Historical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and, since 1991, at the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University. He received his habilitation in 1995 and was promoted to professor in 2006. Hlavačka is a member of the editorial boards of several academic journals. His research focuses on the political, social, and economic history of the Bohemian landsand the Habsburgmonarchy in the 18th and 19th centuries, with particular emphasis on the history of transportation and communication, the family businesses history, the emergence of civil society, and especially the role of self-government, as well after 1989 as the creation of new history textbooks for elementary schools, high schools, and vocational schools.
