This ancient system included techniques such as throwing, striking, joint locks, and chokeholds, along with counters to these moves. After extensive study, Kano recognized that many styles lacked a unifying philosophy. He identified one core principle that would define judo: maximum efficiency in the use of mind and body.From this principle, modern judo was born. Kano selected and refined techniques that embodied this idea, giving rise to a discipline where "Ju" means gentleness or yielding and "Do" means the way or principle. Together, Judo means The Way of Gentleness-a path where giving way can lead to ultimate victory.Kodokan, meaning "the school for studying the Way," became the foundation of judo as we know it-a martial art, a philosophy, and a way of life.
